The Purrfect Litter box!
The litter box is a very sensitive place. Your cat has to feel safe. Here are a few things to look for when setting up your litter box…
Size matters! Make sure it’s at least 1.5 times the size of your cat. They have to be able to get in and turn around.
Scoop that box! You don’t want to go in a dirty bathroom. Your cat doesn’t want to either. Keep it clean and use non scented cleaners.
Speaking of scents … your kitty has a super strong sense of smell. We don’t want to use scented litter, additives, etc. If the scent is too strong, kitty may avoid the box.
Make it easy to get to! It should be in an area that’s easy to get to. It should also be easy to get in. If it’s got high sides to jump over or you have to work too hard to get in, it may cause avoidance.
Take the top off. Some cats will use a lidded box but for many, it makes them feel trapped inside. So, try taking those lids off and see if that helps.
Location, location, location. If the box is in a. corner, kitty may feel trapped. High traffic areas are also scary. We all want privacy.
The litter you use should be soft and sandy. Run it through your fingers. If it feels at all picky or rough, it may bother those super sensitive paws. Switch to something softer.
Try spraying organic catnip spray on the back rim. This will entice kitty to enter.
How many? The recommendation is number of cats, plus one. So, if you have one cat, you should have two boxes. Two cats = three boxes. Etc.
In addition to scooping, we need to clean the box. Plastic especially will absorb bacteria. Clean it with a safe, gentle, non scented cleaner regularly.
